I have been in University for about one year. During my stay here, I cameto realize that university life is like drinking coke. We experience all tastesof life here, sour, sweet, bitter and hot.

I am from Province, which is far away from here. I often miss my Mum,friends, and relatives in my hometown. However, I can't see them very often. Soloneliness always keeps me company. I am sad that I can't be there withthem.

Lucky for me, life in university is rich and colorful. With more freetime,we can do many more things besides study, such as joining societies clubs, and taking part-time s. Such activities not only make our life more colorful, but also help us improve all kinds of skills. The university is a societyminiature, what we learn here will benefit our future life.

Our path in life will not always be smooth. Setbacks can't be avoided.Failing an important exam, break up with boy or girl friend, or refused by apromising company, such setbacks are likely to get us down. Sometimes we fell sofrustrated that we even burst into tears.

Drinkin coke is wonderful, despite the undesirble consequent hiccups. It'sbitter, sour and peppery, but also sweet. And you'll even feel excited aftergulping down a glass. A college experience is part of growing up. We cry, smile, fall in love, get hurt, leave, learn and then we become a better person.

University life is like drinking coke. I'm experiencing it. And I know, Ienjoy it!

I have a belief deep down within my heart that my future will bebright.

My future will be bright with all my loving families. Whether time find usfar apart or it keeps us close together, they are always standing by myside.

My future will be bright with all the close and caring friends of mine.Whenever I am sad and down, I know they would hold my hands and warm myheart.

My future will be bright with the belief in brighter days. Life doesn’talways play by rules, and we must face the fact that there are days that thingscould be better. But I have a belief which see me through the dark times.

I have a belief that joys once lost can always be found.

I have a belief that there is rainbows after every storm.

I have a belief that in the long run, my efforts will give back as much asI give, without a doubt.

This belief gives me hope that is as certain as sun when the world seems tobe wearing a frown.

It is a steady and joyful light in my life.

It is a blessing I continue to count on through the years.

It is a light that will shine in me until the end of time.

It is a treasure a million times more valuable than the ones some peoplespend a lifetime trying to find.

Now, m dear friends, carry the sun inside you, and reach out for the dreamsthat guide you where you want to go. You have what it takes to make your path ofsucce. You have the courage and strength to see things through. You have thesmile that will guide you to the beautiful tomorrows.

So, with so much to be thank for, I believe that my future will be bright, and I believe that our future will be bright!

To me March 28th was a lucky day. It was on that particular evening that Ifound myself at central stage, in the spotlight. Winning the 21stCentury·Ericsson Cup Seventh National English Speaking Competition is a memorythat I shall treasure and one that will surely stay.

More important than winning the Cup is the friendship that has beenestablished and developed among the contestants, and the chance to communicateoffstage in addition to competing onstage. Also the competition helps boostpublic speaking in China, a skill hitherto undervalued.

For me, though, the competition is a more personal experience. Habituallyshy, I had been reluctant to take part in any such activities. Encouraged by myfriends, however, I made a last-minute decision to give it a try. In the courseof preparation I somehow rediscovered myself, a truer me.

I found that, after all, I like communicating with other people; thatexchanging views can be so much fun—and so much rewarding, both emotionally andintellectually; that public speaking is most effective when you are leastguarded; and that it is essential to success in every walk of life.

At a more practical level, I realized knowing what you are going to say andhow you are going to say it are equally important. To take the original ideasout of your head and transplant them, so to speak, to that of others, you needto have an organized mind. This ability improves with training.

Yet there should not be any loss or addition or distortion in the process. Those ideas that finally find their way into another head need to berecognizably yours. Language is a means to transmit information, not a means toobstruct communication. It should be lucid to be penetrating.

In China, certain public speaking skills have been unduly emphasized. Willit really help, we are compelled to ask, to bang at the podium or yell at thetop of your lungs, if you have come with a poorly organized speech, a muddledmind, and unwillingness to truly share your views?

Above all, the single most important thing I learnt was that as a publicspeaker, you need to pay attention, first and foremost, to the content of yourspeech. And second, the structure of your speech: how one idea relates andprogresses to another.

Only after these come delivery and non-verbal communication: speed control, platform manner, and so on. Pronunciation is important, yet of greaterimportance is this: Is your language competent enough to express your ideasexactly the way you intend them to be understood?

I was informed afterwards that I was chosen to be the winner for myappropriately worded speech, excellent presence and quick-witted response. In soremarking, the judges clearly showed their preference: they come to listen formeaningful ideas, not for loose judgments, nor easy laughters.

Some contestants failed to address their questions head on. Some were ableto, but did not know where to stop—the dragging on betrayed their lack ofconfidence. The root cause was that they did not listen attentively to thequestions. Or they were thinking of what they had prepared.

As I said in my speech, It is vitally important that we young people domore serious thinking ... to take them [issues like globalization] on and givethem honest thinking is the first step to be prepared for both opportunities andchallenges coming our way. We need to respond honestly.

A competition like this draws talented students from all over the country. And of course, I learnt more things than just about public speaking. Since inthe final analysis, public speaking is all about effective communication. Andthis goes true for all communications, whatever their setting.

And the following is the final version of my speech:

Thirty years ago, American President Richard Nixon made an epoch-makingvisit to China, a country still isolated at that time. Premier Zhou Enlai saidto him, Your handshake came over the vastest ocean in the world—twenty-fiveyears of no communication. Thirty years since, China and America have exchangedmany handshakes. The fundamental implication of this example is that the need tocommunicate across differences in culture and ideology is not only felt by thetwo countries but by many other nations as well.

As we can see today, environmentalists from different countries are makingjoint efforts to address the issue of global warming, economists are seekingsolutions to financial crises that rage in a particular region but nonethelesscripple the world economy, and politicians and diplomats are getting together todiscuss the issue of combating terrorism. Peace and prosperity has become acommon goal that we are striving for all over the world. Underlying this mightytrend of global communication is the echo of E. M. Forsters words Onlyconnect!

With the IT revolution, traditional boundaries of human society fall away. Our culture, politics, society and commerce are being sloshed into one largemelting pot of humanity. In this interlinked world, there are no outsiders, fora disturbance in one place is likely to impact other parts of the globe. We havebegun to realize that a world divided cannot endure.

China is now actively integrating into the world. Our recent entry to theWTO is a good example. For decades, we have taken pride in being self-reliant,but now we realize the importance of participating in and contributing to abroader economic order. From a precarious role in the world arena to our presentWTO membership, we have come a long way.

But what does the way ahead look like? In some parts of the world peopleare demonstrating against globalization. Are they justified, then, incriticizing the globalizing world? Instead of narrowing the gap between the richand the poor, they say, globalization enables the developed nations to swallowthe developing nations wealth in debts and interest. Globalization, they argue, should be about a common interest in every other nations economic health.

We are reminded by Karl Marx that capital goes beyond national borders andeludes control from any other entity. This has become a reality. Multinationalcorporations are seeking the lowest cost, the largest market, and the mostfavourable policy. They are often powerful lobbyists in governmentdecision-making, ruthless expansionists in the global market and a devastatingpresence to local businesses.

For China, still more challenges exist. How are we going to ensure a smoothtransition from the planned economy to a market-based one? How to construct alegal system that is sound enough and broad enough to respond to the needs of adynamic society? How to maintain our cultural identity in an increasinglyhomogeneous world? And how to define greatness in our rise as a peace-lovingnation? Globalization entails questions that concern us all.

Like many young people my age in China, I want to see my country getprosperous and enjoy respect in the international community. But it seems to methat mere patriotism is not just enough. It is vitally important that we youngpeople do more serious thinking and broaden our mind to bigger issues. Theremight never be easy answers to those issues such as globalization, but to takethem on and give them honest thinking is the first step to be prepared for bothopportunities and challenges coming our way. This is also one of the thoughtsthat came to me while preparing this speech.
