I feel that this award was not made to me as a man but to my work -- alife's work in the agony and sweat of the human spirit not for glory and leastof all for profit but to create out of the materials of the human spiritsomething which did not exist before.

I feel that this award was not made to me as a man but to my work -- alife's work in the agony and sweat of the human spirit not for glory and leastof all for profit but to create out of the materials of the human spiritsomething which did not exist before. So this award is only mine in trust. Itwill not be difficult to find a dedication for the money part of it commensuratewith the purpose and significance of its origin. But I would like to do the samewith the acclaim too by using this moment as a pinnacle from which I might belistened to by the young men and women already dedicated to the same anguish andtravail among whom is already that one who will some day stand here where I amstanding.

Our tragedy today is a general and universal physical fear so longsustained by now that we can even bear it. There are no longer problems of thespirit. There is only the question: When will I be blown up? Because of this theyoung man or woman writing today has forgotten the problems of the human heartin conflict with itself which alone can make good writing because only that isworth writing about worth the agony and the sweat.

He must learn them again. He must teach himself that the basest of allthings is to be afraid; and teaching himself that forget it forever leaving noroom in his workshop for anything but the old verities and truths of the heartthe old universal truths lacking which any story is ephemeral and doomed -- loveand honor and pity and pride and compassion and sacrifice. Until he does so helabors under a curse. He writes not of love but of lust of defeats in whichnobody loses anything of value of victories without hope and worst of allwithout pity or compassion. His griefs grieve on no universal bones leaving noscars. He writes not of the heart but of the glands.

Until he relearns these things he will write as though he stood among andwatched the end of man. I decline to accept the end of man. It is easy enough tosay that man is immortal simply because he will endure: that when the lastding-dong of doom has clanged and faded from the last worthless rock hangingtideless in the last red and dying evening that even then there will still beone more sound: that of his puny inexhaustible voice still talking. I refuse toaccept this. I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He isimmortal not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice butbecause he has a soul a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice andendurance.

The poet’s the writer's duty is to write about these things. It is hisprivilege to help man endure by lifting his heart by reminding him of thecourage and honor and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice whichhave been the glory of his past. The poet's voice need not merely be the recordof man it can be one of the props the pillars to help him endure andprevail.

Ladies and Gentlemen I'd planned to speak to you tonight to report on thestate of the union but the events of earlier today have led me to change thoseplans. Today is a day for mourning and remembering. Nancy and I are pained tothe core by the tragedy of the shuttle Challenger. We know we share this painwith all of the people of our country. This is truly a national loss.

Nineteen years ago almost to the day we lost three astronauts in a terribleaccident on the ground. But we've never lost an astronaut in flight. We've neverhad a tragedy like this.

And perhaps we've forgotten the courage it took for the crew of theshuttle. But they the Challenger Seven were aware of the dangers but overcamethem and did their jobs brilliantly. We mourn seven heroes: Michael Smith DickScobee Judith Resnik Ronald McNair Ellison Onizuka Gregory Jarvis and ChristaMcAuliffe.

We mourn their loss as a nation together.

For the families of the seven we cannot bear as you do the full impact ofthis tragedy. But we feel the loss and we're thinking about you so very much.Your loved ones were daring and brave and they had that special grace thatspecial spirit that says "Give me a challenge and I'll meet it with joy." Theyhad a hunger to explore the universe and discover its truths. They wished toserve and they did. They served all of us.

We've grown used to wonders in this century. It's hard to dazzle us. Butfor twenty-five years the United States space program has been doing just that. We've grown used to the idea of space and perhaps we forget that we've only justbegun. We're still pioneers. They the members of the Challenger crew werepioneers.

And I want to say something to the schoolchildren of America who werewatching the live coverage of the shuttle's take-off. I know it's hard tounderstand but sometimes painful things like this happen. It's all part of theprocess of exploration and discovery. It's all part of taking a chance andexpanding man's horizons. The future doesn't belong to the fainthearted; itbelongs to the brave. The Challenger crew was pulling us into the future andwe'll continue to follow them.

Ladies and Gentlemen

I'm only going to talk to you just for a minute or so this evening becauseI have some -- some very sad news for all of you -- Could you lower those signsplease? -- I have some very sad news for all of you and I think sad news for allof our fellow citizens and people who love peace all over the world; and that isthat Martin Luther King was shot and was killed tonight in MemphisTennessee.

Martin Luther King dedicated his life to love and to justice between fellowhuman beings. He died in the cause of that effort. In this difficult day in thisdifficult time for the United States it's perhaps well to ask what kind of anation we are and what direction we want to move in. For those of you who areblack -- considering the evidence evidently is that there were white people whowere responsible -- you can be filled with bitterness and with hatred and adesire for revenge.

We can move in that direction as a country in greater polarization -- blackpeople amongst blacks and white amongst whites filled with hatred toward oneanother. Or we can make an effort as Martin Luther King did to understand and tocomprehend and replace that violence that stain of bloodshed that has spreadacross our land with an effort to understand compassion and love.

For those of you who are black and are tempted to fill with -- be filledwith hatred and mistrust of the injustice of such an act against all whitepeople I would only say that I can also feel in my own heart the same kind offeeling. I had a member of my family killed but he was killed by a whiteman.

But we have to make an effort in the United States. We have to make aneffort to understand to get beyond or go beyond these rather difficulttimes.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we standsigned the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a greatbeacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in theflames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the longnight of captivity.

But one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the Negro isstill not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadlycrippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. Onehundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midstof a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro isstill languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exilein his own land. So we have come here today to dramatize an appallingcondition.

In a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When thearchitects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution andthe declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to whichevery American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men would beguaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit ofhappiness.

It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory noteinsofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacredobligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check which has come backmarked "insufficient funds." But we refuse to believe that the bank of justiceis bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the greatvaults of opportunity of this nation. So we have come to cash this check -- acheck that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security ofjustice. We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierceurgency of now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or totake the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to rise from the darkand desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now isthe time to open the doors of opportunity to all of God's children. Now is thetime to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solidrock of brotherhood.

It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment andto underestimate the determination of the Negro. This sweltering summer of theNegro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigoratingautumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but abeginning. Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will nowbe content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business asusual. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro isgranted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shakethe foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.

But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warmthreshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining ourrightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek tosatisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness andhatred.
